Seven Months in the Making

Shari J. Ryan • Oct 29, 2021

 It all started last March...

The day I signed on with Hachette UK - Bookouture was the most exciting pinnacle of my career to date. It’s been about ten years since I began writing my first book, and I never would have imagined I could someday end up here.

At eight years old, I promised myself to write a book someday. It was a bigger task than I may have assumed at that time, but life happened, and twenty years later, I penned the first of many books to come.

It took me a little while to find a genre I was passionate about. I love every book I’ve written, as I’ve put my heart and soul into each one. Some might have just my funny bone inside, but I have loved writing every word I have written over the last ten years.

However, it wasn’t until I veered down a slightly different path toward Historical Fiction. It started off with an interest in writing a book about the Holocaust, in memory of my grandmother and great-grandmother, both of whom are survivors.

I didn’t expect to find the words needed to create this type of book, but my fingers kept drumming against the keyboard and the research became fascinating (painful at many times), and I need to know more.

Flash forward a few years, and Bookouture has welcomed me with a two book offer, both involving stories around the Holocaust during WWII.

Over the past year, I’ve pushed myself harder than I ever have before. I wanted to create a story that was entirely factual but with only fictional characters with a unique plot based on many true instances. It was a challenge, just as the other four historical fiction books have been, but nothing can trump the pride I feel when all said and done. I know the time and love I put into this story, and I’m very proud to share it with the world.

Therefore, in fewer words, I'm proud to finally release: THE BOOKSELLER OF DACHAU

I truly hope you enjoy the story, and I would love to hear what you think when you're done. I've opened up a discussion board for readers who have finished the book, and I'll be around daily to answer any questions you might have about the story.

To hear more about my personal journey, The Historical Fiction Company has generously featured an article I wrote. Check it out here

About the Book (From the Publisher)

Germany, 1940: “Can’t I say goodbye?” I shout, cupping my hands over my mouth. The Nazis dragging him away stare at me, soldiers with icy glares. No. No, no, no, they can’t make him leave.

The Bookseller of Dachau by @authorsharijryan is out now!

This heart-wrenching yet hopeful tale will restore your faith in humanity, and in the power of love to triumph over evil.

Fans of The Tattooist of Auschwitz, Orphan Train and Kristin Hannah will be blown away by this breathtakingly gripping page-turner.

More about the book

In Nazi Germany, innocent people vanish every day, torn mercilessly from their homes and loved ones. When Matilda’s childhood sweetheart Hans is in danger, she doesn’t hesitate to hide him in her attic. Neighbors their whole lives, and desperately in love with one another, she’ll do anything to protect him. For months, they exist by candlelight, smuggling food and communicating in whispers. But, in the end, nothing can stop the soldiers charging in…

America, 2018: Grace opens a mustard-yellow envelope, and her world unravels. She has inherited a bookstore in the small town of Dachau from the grandmother she had no idea existed. Her mom, adopted as a baby, spent her life searching for her biological parents––and died without ever knowing.

Grace visits her legacy––a bookshop on a cobbled lane filled with lost memories. She combs through handwritten letters, unearthing the story of her grandmother Matilda. A woman whose one true love was locked within the barbed wire of Dachau––a woman who never gave up hope…

As Grace pieces together her family’s heartbreaking past, she discovers the long-buried secret of her own identity. But when she learns the truth, will she ever be the same again?
